Self Finishes Fourth on DuQuoin Dirt; Sights Set to Pavement Racing
Concord, North Carolina (September 3, 2019) - ARCA Menards Series points leader Michael Self (No. 25 Sinclair Oil Toyota) wrapped up the series’ second consecutive dirt race with a strong fourth place finish over the holiday weekend at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds Magic Mile.
Coming off an epic dirt win two weeks ago at Springfield, Self returned to the dirt track looking to maintain his series points lead before returning to the familiar ground of pavement racing later this month for the final three races of the season.
In his first appearance at DuQuoin’s historic southern Illinois race track Self took to the track Saturday making his first laps around the mile surface. After qualifying fifth, the 28-year old driver impressed again by making his way up to second near the halfway point of the 100-lap event. Getting shuffled back a couple positions Self struggled with pesky lap cars making it difficult to advance his position as the laps ticked down. In the end, the championship chaser would settle for a solid fourth place finish marking his 14th top-five finish of the season.
“I’m glad we were able to grab another top-five, but disappointed because I feel like I gave some spots away at the end,” Self said. “I made a few mistakes with lapped cars, and even though I actually felt like we had the best car at times, it was super hard to pass or gain much track position. I’m glad we got through my first few dirt races without any problems, and I’m looking forward to getting back on asphalt at Salem in a few week.”
The ARCA Series will move back onto pavement and revisit Salem Speedway for the next event on Saturday, September 14. Earlier in the season Self picked up the win at Salem during the rain shortened spring event.
